- 100% solids epoxy basecoat (resin + hardener), color of your choice. This is the professional material — it cures thicker and harder than the water-based kit epoxies.

Step by step
Step 1 — Test the slab for moisture
Concrete wicks ground moisture up through the slab, and moisture vapor is the number-one cause of coating failure. The simple version: tape a 2-foot square of clear plastic sheeting tightly to the floor and leave it 24 hours. If condensation forms under it or the concrete darkens, the slab is passing enough vapor to lift a coating — you need a vapor-tolerant primer or a different plan. Step 2 — Repair cracks and spalls
Coating does not bridge a moving crack — it telegraphs it and then splits along it. Step 3 — Grind the concrete (do not acid etch)
This is the step that separates a 10-year floor from a 2-year one. Run the diamond grinder across the entire slab — including tight to the walls with an edger attachment — until the surface has an even, dull, opened profile in the CSP-2 to CSP-3 range (think the texture of 60- to 80-grit sandpaper). That mechanical tooth is what the epoxy locks into. Acid etching, the kit shortcut, only lightly roughens the top and leaves residue that undermines the bond. Vacuum every speck of dust when you are done; the floor must be surgically clean before coating.
Step 4 — Check your conditions, then prime
Epoxy is fussy about temperature and humidity. Aim for a slab temperature in the 60s to low 70s°F and moderate humidity — in East Tennessee that is realistically spring and fall, or a climate-controlled garage. Step 7 — Roll the clear topcoat
The clear coat is the wear layer — it takes the tires, the tool chests, and the sun. Roll it evenly over the flaked, scraped floor.
